- I remember seeing some comments awhile back about some videos shown
- during a safety seminar.
-
- I attended Rod Machado's "Handling Inflight Emergencies" seminar last
- evening and was favorably impressed. He directly addressed issues
- related to emergencies in an interesting and humorous way, and kept my
- attention to the end of an 18 hour day.
-
- Some of his points were obvious to me (don't run out of fuel), but
- some were not. For example, given that you are forced into a gear-up
- landing, and you have a choice of pavement or grass, which should you
- pick? His answer is the pavement. The fire danger on pavement is
- minimal, and grass tends to ball up under the plane, is rougher, and
- you are more likely to nose over. After the plane has stopped, and
- you've gotten out, what's the next thing to do? *Close the door* The
- firemen are (presumably) going to show up and douse your plane in
- foam. Closing the door saves your interior and perhaps your avionics
- too.
-
- He also had good videos, including an amazingly stupid crash in
- Alaska. The story is that this joker (pre-solo student, less than 8
- hours) straps a video camera on his dad's Champ, and "borrows" it
- without permission. The view is looking forward, and shows the nose
- of the plane and a propeller. A hand comes in from the side and tries
- to hand-prop the engine. Then he sticks his face in the camera (to
- make sure it's running), then reaches forward and manages to get it
- started while standing between the wing and the prop. Next we see him
- on the takeoff roll, he becomes airborne and heads for his
- girlfriend's house to show off. At about 1000AGL he does a loop, then
- a couple of very steep turns (I thought he was going to roll it), then
- another loop. On his third loop, he stalls and enters a spin. I lost
- count of the turns in the spin, I believe I saw 4 or 5. He comes out
- of the spin just inches below treetop level. He was saved (this time)
- buy the fact the trees were only about 3-4 inches in diameter and
- widely spaced (4-5 feet). They cushioned the impact substantially.
- The camera kept running, and after some silence he says "He's gonna
- kill me".
-
- Apparently his dad didn't kill him, a plane crash 3 years later did.
-
- Anyway, if you get a chance to attend this seminar I recommend it.
