- I'm far from a VW expert, but I had a similar problem with my MG Midget. This
- sounds to me like a 1st-3rd motion shaft bearing. This bearing runs between
- the input and output shafts on the transmision, and accomodates differences in
- speed. Now, the VW transaxle may not even have an arrangement like this, but
- if it does, that's what I'd check. The bearing turns fastest in neutral and
- slower in each ascending gear, except fourth, which I believe is direct drive.
- When the clutch is disengaged, the bearing turns very slowly if at all, so if
- the bearing is wearing out, it will rumble the loudest when you are in neutral.
- Try listening very carefully while driving in first; if it is in fact that
- bearing, you should be able to hear it faintly.
-
- If it is in fact that bearing (whose name I do not know), it will need to be
- replaced eventually. You don't say whether it is loud enough to hear from the
- driver's seat, but if it is, then it may be turning into a real problem. I
- can't speak for the cost of repair either, but in any case, good luck!
