  22. Years ago I bought a 1-something inch socket (from Sears) that I used.  It
  23. was more like $10 but it probably is $30 today.  Two other solutions are
  24. in order.  First is one as you suggest.  I have seen a flat piece of metal
  25. with a hex hole in it and a tab.  Yes, you hit it with a hammer.  BowWow
  26. or another VW-ish place might have it.

  28. Final solution is the one suggested in John Muir's book.  Get a cold
  29. chisel and sledge hammer and turn the nut by putting the cold chisel on an
  30. edge had hitting.  Worst case is that you can only take it off once and
  31. then must replace it.  In practice you can usually do it 2 or 3 times and
  32. the cost of the nut is less than the $107 cresent wrench.
