- I╒m replacing the valves on my 1980 Toyota Celica, a job I╒ve never done
- before. I╒ve completely disassembled the head, except for removing the
- valve guides, which I also plan to replace. The exhaust valves are in
- rough shape. The intake valves are okay but since I╒m doing the work
- already I decided to replace them all. I plan to have the seats refaced
- by a machinist.
-
- My dilemma is: how difficult is it to replace the valve guides? I╒d like
- to do it myself to save money, but is it worth it? I think I can get the
- old guides out and the new ones in, and the head doesn╒t have to be
- heated. But am I risking damaging the head? And, if I do put the new
- guides in myself, do I need to ream them to ensure proper clearance with
- the new valves? Would this be a risky operation?
-
- Obviously, I╒m concerned about getting the proper clearance between
- valves and guides. The parts people I╒ve talked to have all implied that
- the valve guides would need to be reamed. Why is this the case? It
- seems that the proper clearance would be a manufactured characteristic of
- the valves and guides, ie, they would be made to fit each other properly
- upon installation. Would this be any more likely if I were to buy guides
- manufactured by the same company as the valves?
-
- If I do end up doing this myself, what tools should I have for the job?
- Do I need a special tool for driving the guides in, or could I make
- something out of the tools I already have?
-
- If I were to buy the 8mm reamer that the shop manual says should be used
- for reaming the guides, could I do a quality job without having any
- experience?
-
- Finally, a question about lapping the valves. I have tools for lapping.
- Is this tricky, and could I damage my newly machined seats, or will I be
- alright as long as I exercise some caution?
-
- Thanks!
