- OFFICE MEMO Effects of a new Digital Standard Date:11/13/92
- Sorry I haven't written in so long, but I just bought a new car and have been
- in shock for the last week.
-
- I have recieved many responses from the readers concerning my comment that when
- you digitize something, you have to filter out information. When digitizing a
- signal, an anti-aliasing filter MUST be used. The rub with digital, comes with
- using digital masters. As the standard improves, and I am confident that it
- will improve (just look at the transition from the very established 78 RPM to
- 33 RPM records. Established standards CAN change), the digital masters are
- stuck with the standard that was in place when they were recorded. Unlike a
- digital master, an analog master has no set pre-established limits to its
- resulution. I have heard several digital "front ends" that have sounded very
- good, but have not quite achieved the level that a top notch analog system has
- achieved to my ears. I listen to music for enjoyment and relaxation, so my
- ears are my guide; my multi-meter is banished to the closet when the music
- starts.
-
- Increasing the digital standard would improve the stereo reproduction field in
- ways that I have not heard discussed before. Increasing the number of bits
- (word length) and sampling rates, would allow the designers of thier components
- to not push the edge of the envelope so hard. What I mean by that is a higher
- digital standard would allow some design breathing room; much in the same way
- that oversampling allowed more leaniancy in the way the high frequency
- filtering was implimented. This would allow designers to use cost cuttting
- measures in thier budget components (consumer crap excluded, they always cut
- corners), and those cost cutting measures might not be as sonically evident as
- they are in todays line of budget digital components. So not only would the
- cost-no-option components benefit, but I think the improvement to the lower
- ranks of digital components will be even more dramatic. Any opinions on this?

- I am infatuated with old tube equipment. I have or had some Dyna stuff (PAS,
- FM3, SCA-35) over the years. I have heard my SCA sound fairly good with some
- minor modifiactions (wire etc.). I would like to know of anybody who has had
- good luck with old tube equipment. If so how does it compare with new stuff.
- I need an amplifier for use with Eminent Technology LFT-VI loudspeakers, they
- need a minimum of 100 watts (power hungry mothers).
