- Hello,
-
- Over the last year, I've received advice from the readers of this group
- about buying various hi-fi equipment, first a CD player & amplifier,
- and second, a cassette deck (I ended up buying the Pioneer CT-W650R -
- yes, I realise that's got the dreaded auto-reverse, and dual deck,
- but considering that 90% of the tapes I currently have (around 220)
- are TDK D or AD, and recorded on a small (ie poor quality) 'ghetto blaster',
- any small reduction in quality compared with (say) Nakamichi decks is
- lost in the huge mass of noise on the recordings themselves.).
-
- Now, to complete my system (and get the ghetto blaster totally out of
- the loop), I'm looking at buying a tuner. Well, I think so, at least,
- because I've seen ads for 'receivers' around. I _think_ the difference
- is that the receiver has an amplifier built in, in which case I just
- need a tuner, but a clarification would be appreciated.
- Also, I need to know what to look for (or look out for) in tuners.
- I guess AM/FM would be standard these days - I'd prefer both stereo.
- But what else ? Digital tuning ? Millons of station memories ?
- Remote control ? What features would you say are :
- a) essential
- b) useful
- c) not worth having/best avoided
-
- (FYI: My amplifier is the Harmon/Kardon HD 6100, CD player is HD 7300,
- speakers are Jamo CL-10's, and cassette deck is Pioneer CT-W650R)
-
- What sort of money should I be looking to spend on a tuner ?
- (US readers: *DOUBLE* your prices to get prices in Australian dollars.
- <sigh>
- (This is based on prices I've seen in this group - for example,
- the Nakamichi Cassette Deck 2 was mentioned at $400 (or less) here,
- and retails for $795 in Australia. Based on exchange rate alone, it
- should be $550-$600 here, so someone is getting more than their share
- of the profits (probably the Aust. Government :-( )
-
- Either post replies, or e-mail to dcook@spam.adelaide.edu.au
-
- Thanks in advance,
-
