  15.   Over the last year, I've received advice from the readers of this group
  16. about buying various hi-fi equipment, first a CD player & amplifier,
  17. and second, a cassette deck (I ended up buying the Pioneer CT-W650R -
  18. yes, I realise that's got the dreaded auto-reverse, and dual deck,
  19. but considering that 90% of the tapes I currently have (around 220)
  20. are TDK D or AD, and recorded on a small (ie poor quality) 'ghetto blaster',
  21. any small reduction in quality compared with (say) Nakamichi decks is
  22. lost in the huge mass of noise on the recordings themselves.).

  24.   Now, to complete my system (and get the ghetto blaster totally out of
  25. the loop), I'm looking at buying a tuner. Well, I think so, at least,
  26. because I've seen ads for 'receivers' around. I _think_ the difference
  27. is that the receiver has an amplifier built in, in which case I just
  28. need a tuner, but a clarification would be appreciated. 
  29.   Also, I need to know what to look for (or look out for) in tuners.
  30. I guess AM/FM would be standard these days - I'd prefer both stereo.
  31. But what else ? Digital tuning ? Millons of station memories ?
  32. Remote control ? What features would you say are  :
  33. a) essential
  34. b) useful
  35. c) not worth having/best avoided

  37. (FYI: My amplifier is the Harmon/Kardon HD 6100, CD player is HD 7300,
  38. speakers are Jamo CL-10's, and cassette deck is Pioneer CT-W650R)

  40. What sort of money should I be looking to spend on a tuner ?
  41. (US readers: *DOUBLE* your prices to get prices in Australian dollars.

  43. (This is based on prices I've seen in this group - for example,
  44. the Nakamichi Cassette Deck 2 was mentioned at $400 (or less) here,
  45. and retails for $795 in Australia. Based on exchange rate alone, it
  46. should be $550-$600 here, so someone is getting more than their share
  47. of the profits (probably the Aust. Government :-( )
