- I picked up a Sony X55ES for about $500 as a floor sample (Q Audio in
- Cambridge, MA). The X55ES was Sony's ultimate single box ES cd player
- (there were one or two higher-end models, but they were basically this
- transport plus an external DAC), and sold for about $1000+. It has the best
- CD sound I've ever heard, partly coming from the fact that it is ultra-stable
- (weighs 29 lbs!!!). If you look around, you may be able to find one for $500
- or so. Sony discontinued the X55 at their last line changeover (even their
- ES line changes over every year or so), and apparently didn't replace it
- with anything comparably high-end.
