  14. I picked up a Sony X55ES for about $500 as a floor sample (Q Audio in 
  15. Cambridge, MA). The X55ES was Sony's ultimate single box ES cd player 
  16. (there were one or two higher-end models, but they were basically this
  17. transport plus an external DAC), and sold for about $1000+. It has the best
  18. CD sound I've ever heard, partly coming from the fact that it is ultra-stable
  19. (weighs 29 lbs!!!). If you look around, you may be able to find one for $500
  20. or so. Sony discontinued the X55 at their last line changeover (even their
  21. ES line changes over every year or so), and apparently didn't replace it
  22. with anything comparably high-end.
