- Hi everybody.
-
- Whenever watching SW, I like to choose a "theme" and observe the entire trilogy
- from that perspective. Today's theme is the behavior of the junior imperial
- officers (JIOs). These are the guys above the stormtroopers, but not so high
- as the captains and admirals (the 'named' officers).
-
- The JIOs are (sometimes) REALLY *funny*. They do *NOT* maintain the poker faces
- that so characterizes their superiors (and the stormtroopers below them have no
- visible faces at all). Free of the fear of failure that freezes the their
- superiors, they openly display emotions in their voice, expressions, and words.
-
- I will give a few examples, but leave most instances for you to discover (there
- are *lot* of examples).
-
- - A New Hope
- Detention area JIO upon seeing Chewey: "Where are you taking this...thing?",
- in a voice that makes his views on Wookies clear.
-
- -Empire Strikes Back:
- Near Hoth, when Vader "relieves" Ozzel of his duties and promotes Piett, a JIO
- (I think the one that alerted Piett to the report from the Hoth probe) can't
- help himself and stretchs his neck to look into the camera (where, presumably
- Vader is visible). [Look for this scene - it is really funny]
- [there are other instances of JIOs who can't avoid turning their heads or
- streching their necks to look into the camera]
-
- After the MF attached itself to Needa's SD, the following exchange takes place:
- TRACKING JIO: Captain Needa, the ship no longer appears on our scopes.
- NEEDA: They can't have disappeared. No ship that small has a cloaking device.
- TRACKING JIO: Well, there's no trace of them, sir.
- The voice with which this last remark is said clearly betrays a "I don't care
- about your theories - they are not on the scope, and it is your neck, not mine
- that's on the line" attitude.
-
- - Return of the Jedi
- When Vader shuttle approached the DS II (very begining), DS controller says in
- a very self-important voice: "The security deflector shield will be deactivated
- when we have confirmation of your code transmission." (I think Vader's shuttle
- got more red tapes to fly through than Shuttle Tydirium :-) )
-
- After Luke surrendered to the empire, a JIO handed him to Vader saying in a
- very proud voice: "This is a Rebel that surrendered to us. Although he denies
- it, I believe there may be more of them, and I request permission to conduct a
- further search of the area. He was armed only with this."
-
- When trapped in the bunker, JIO says: "Freeze! You Rebel scum." to Han and the
- rest of the scum.
