- Jarman's Tempest is a million times better than Prospero's Books.
- At least Jarman doesn't seem to consider himself greater than
- Shakespeare. Greenaway is "Prospero's FX, with additional dialog by Wm
- Shakespeare (not that you can hear it anyway)". And always so ponderously
- serious about everything.
-
- Greenaway's film could actually have been based on almost anything: the
- Tempest was only accidental. It could just as easily been Bilbo's
- Books, based on "The Hobbit", though he would have needed a shorter cast.
- If it actually brough anything out from the Tempest, that might have been
- good, but in fact it just obscured. Greenway should stick to less
- ambitious scripts whose vacuity his artiness could fill; he was
- out of his depth to treat one of our language's masterpieces.
