  22. Jarman's Tempest is a million times better than Prospero's Books.
  23. At least Jarman doesn't seem to consider himself greater than 
  24. Shakespeare. Greenaway is "Prospero's FX, with additional dialog by Wm 
  25. Shakespeare (not that you can hear it anyway)". And always so ponderously
  26. serious about everything.

  28. Greenaway's film could actually have been based on almost anything: the
  29. Tempest was only accidental. It could just as easily been Bilbo's
  30. Books, based on "The Hobbit", though he would have needed a shorter cast.
  31. If it actually brough anything out from the Tempest, that might have been
  32. good, but in fact it just obscured. Greenway should stick to less
  33. ambitious scripts whose vacuity his artiness could fill; he was 
  34. out of his depth to treat one of our language's masterpieces.
