  44. 2. Some notes on a few of the Western Shinma:
  45.     CAIT SITH - Since he is named for the monstrous Celtic fairy
  46.             cat (note: "Sith" is pronounced "shee"), it's not
  47.             surprising that his attack consists of a pack of
  48.             cat-headed wraiths.
  49.     NIGHT GIA - A shaper of dreams, like Baku (on whom Raen, from
  50.             OAV 1, is based).  He's not actually Baku, though
  51.             someone calls him that at one point in the story.
  52.     PAZUSU - The undisputed leader of the Western Shinma, the
  53.              Arabic-looking Pazusu is often addressed as
  54.          "Pazusu-sama," "Pazusu-dono" or even just "Master."
  55.     WATER LIPPER - A standard-issue water nixie (pale, webbed
  56.                extremities, etc.)
  57. 3. I couldn't come up with a word for "makai" ("spirit/magic world")
  58.    that sounded right, so (as with "shinma") I left it as-is.  Ditto
  59.    for "mashujutsu" -- it's something like "exorcism," literally
  60.    "magical operation."
  61. 4. The weird writing (e.g., @#$%^&*) in the second half of the book
  62.    is not swearing, it's a way to represent the incantations that were
  63.    originally written in...well, weird writing.
  64. 5. We know that Miyu's chronological age is at least 30 even though
  65.    her physiological age is 13.  Carlua and Lemunia were very young
  66.    children when Larva left for Japan, putting them in their mid-20s.
  67.    They are not more than a few years younger than Miyu, and in fact
  68.    they appear just a few years older (mid- to late-teens).

  95. scarlet and white, not cardinal and white!}  She stares with golden
  96. eyes at the panting man, smiling faintly at his distress, her ponytail

  147. scarlet-wrapped ponytail and another with short hair and glasses, walk
  148. together.  Another (somewhat insipid-looking) girl runs up to catch up
  149. with them.

  153.     Asako:  "Cold, isn't it?"

  216. ecstatic.

  321.         seem to be any purpose behind his appearance here...

  323.         come here just to be near me.

  325.          at the shrine...I want to meet you there."

  327. It's a windy night at the forest shrine.  As Miyu approaches the
  328. torii, she notices a black feather and picks it up, only to have it
  329. blow out of her hand.

  338. right where Miyu was sitting on page 10.

  362.          send me back to the Dark anyway."

  380. Miyu but slashes her upraised arm.

  408. She begins to haul in the struggling bird-shinma.  Unlike Miyu in OAV
  409. 2, Hanyuu is unable to break the strip of cloth.

  425. the end of her ribbon.  She yanks him down to a rough landing.

  439. Miyu, annoyed by his verbosity, lights another fireball.

  442.          permit.  I'm going to burn you to ashes."

  446. But Larva catches her arm as she prepares to throw the fireball.

  448.  (46,2) Larva:    "That's enough, isn't it, Miyu?"

  451.  (47,2) Larva:    "Yes?"
  452.  (47,3) Miyu:    (pouting) "...you're late."
  453.  (47,4) Larva:    "I'm sorry, I hadn't realized how much time had
  454.          passed.  His mind sent out confusion, and it finally
  455.          forced its way into mine."
  456.  (47,5) Larva:    "He felt as if he needed to learn what your strength
  457.          was, alone."
  458.     Miyu:    "What?  I..."
  459.  (47,6) Hanyuu:    --Miyu.
  460.  (48,1) Hanyuu:    From our sea makai, a ship...a threat to the Japanese
  461.         Shinma...

  468. Flashback...a sailing ship looms out of the fog, moving forward even
  469. though its sails hang in tatters.  Its rigging and hull gently creak
  470. as it makes its way through the calm seas.  Hanyuu and his mate, Saya,
  471. fly ahead of the ship.

  473.  (49,2) Hanyuu:    "A western ghostship..."
  474.  (49,2) <kii> {creaking}
  475.  (49,3) Hanyuu:    "I wonder if there's anyone left on board?"

  477. A hooded figure in black materializes in the prow of the ghostship.

  479.  (49,4) Hanyuu:    "Shall we go and take a closer look?"
  480.     Saya:    "Well..."
  481.  (49,5) Hanyuu:    "Aa, something glinted?"

  483. The hooded figure, which can now be made out as female, walks out over
  484. the stem and onto the bowsprit, passing beyond the crudely-carved
  485. figurehead.  The wind blows a stray lock of golden hair from her hood.

  488.  (50,1) Hanyuu:    "A shinma?  No, it can't be."
  489.  
  490. The hooded female strides out along the bowsprit and onto the jib
  491. boom.  The jibs are draped on their sheets and the jib boom, blowing
  492. in shreds like the rest of the sails.

  494.  (50,3) Saya:    "At the end of the boom...what type of...blond?"
  495.  (50,4) Hanyuu:    "--A woman?"

  497.  (51,1) Hanyuu:    "She's masked!"
  498.  (51,2) Saya:    "Alone...?  No, there's more of them."

  500.     Saya:    "Nooo...I'm being drawn toward the ship!"

  1539. attacks.  Larva, alarmed, rushes forward to defend Miyu.

  1546. Cait Sith slashes Larva magically, forcing him to break off.

  1562. As Larva and Cait Sith face off and engage each other, Amy, Water
  1563. Lipper and Lemunia surround Miyu.

  1575. Water Lipper lets fly with a wave, which Miyu avoids by springing into
  1576. the air.

  1584. Amy shoots a burst of flame at Miyu, who barely dodges aside.

  1589. (177,3) Lemunia:      "You're caught, aren't you, Miyu?"

  1592. Carlua's incantation forms a sorcerous design on the ground where Miyu
  1593. stands.  As Carlua continues her chant, the lines of the design lift
  1594. out of the earth and entwine Miyu's legs.

  1597. (178,2) <fu fu> <ku ku ku>
  1598. (178,3) <pipi...>
  1599. (177,5) Carlua:          "@$^*#%"
  1600.  
  1601. Carlua puts her mask on, still chanting, as Lemunia and Amy approach
  1602. Miyu.
  1603.  
  1604. (179,1) Lemunia:      "Haha...a formation of magicians."
  1605. (179,2) Lemunia:      "You won't be escaping."
  1606. (179,3) Carlua:       "$&@%*"
  1607. (179,4) Miyu:          "Carlua...?"
  1608. (179,5) Carlua:          "*&^%$#@"
  1609. (179,6) <pou>

  1611. (180,1) Carlua:          "#@$^%&*&^%$#!!"
  1612.  
  1613. Flames suddenly surround Miyu, still trapped in the circle.
  1614.  
  1615. (181,1) Miyu:          "AAAAAAH!  My body...won't move, Larva!"

  1617. (181,2) Larva:          "MIYU!"
  1618. (181,3) Cait Sith:    "Hahaha...your precious Miyu is suffering, isn't
  1619.                she."
  1620. (181,4) Cait Sith:    "And even you can't help her now!"
  1621. (181,4) <gu!>
  1622. (182,1) Miyu:          --Larva.
  1623. (182,1) <ka!>
  1624. (182,2) <ka!>
  1625. (182,4) Larva:          "Miyu!  I'm coming now."
  1626. (182,5) <za!>
  1627.  
  1628. Larva slashes at Cait Sith's cat-wraiths, but as he turns back toward
  1629. Miyu...
  1630.  
  1631. (182,6) Larva:          "!!"
  1632. (182,8) Larva:          "Pazusu!"
  1633. (183,1) Pazusu:          "Until now...you..."
  1634. (183,2) Pazusu:          "...have resisted..."
  1635. (183,3) Pazusu:          "...now die, Larva."
  1636.  
  1637. And with that, Pazusu blasts through Larva's body.  From inside the
  1638. flaming circle, Miyu screams and watches helplessly as Larva
  1639. collapses.
  1640.  
  1641. (184,1) Miyu:          "LARVAAAAAA!"

  1643. (184,4) Larva:          "--Mi...yu."
