- :Back when cartoons were simple and non-commercial, it was enjoyable to wake up
- :on saturday mornings. I could watch "The Harlem Globetrotters" or "Hong Kong
- :Phooey" and just laugh at the fact that they were merely cartoons. Nowadays
- :they have "The Care Bears", "My Little Pony", and even "The Teenage Mutant
- :Ninja Turtles", which are all commercial products. One of the main aspects
- :of these cartoons is to sell more merchandise. If the cartoon can do it on
-
- But wait - the Harlem Globetrotters was just a commercial to sell tickets
- to the basketball games, wasn't it? And Hong Kong Phooey was just a commercial
- to get kids to take karate lessons, and...
-
- Seriously folks , while there have been a few cases where a show may have
- been initiated to sell a product (Capt. Power or some such thing is one that
- comes to mind), in many cases what folks want to call commercials were not
- such in the beginning at least. For instance, TMNT was a cartoon long before
- there were any products being bought up by the population. And while Care
- Bears and Pony had products out, most other cartoons did as well - Flintstones
- vitamins and cereal (and they are not even MAKING new Flintstones cartoon!),
- Warner's Looney Tunes stores (and few of these cartoons are even being made
- today either - they just keep selling the merchandise over the reruns), etc.
-
- And then, of course, there is the entire _anime_ concept where the series
- are typically designed with product releases ... I mean, even Ringo Starr
- and Shining station has Thomas the Tank Engine cartoons, books , COSTUMES, etc.
