- I'd say Belle was--oh, what's the word, I'm looking for? Human? Yeah,
- something like that. Come on, how many people in this world (or any other
- one, animated or otherwise) do that much more than respond to the events
- around them? Luke Skywalker would have stayed a farmer on that desert
- planet if the Empire hadn't killed his aunt and uncle. Bruce Wayne would
- never have donned the funky costume if his parents hadn't been murdered.
- Robin Hood wouldn't have stole from the rich to give to the poor if the
- Normans hadn't been so oppressive (Erol Flynn version), or his father hadn't
- been killed by the Sherrif & accused of witchcraft (Kevin Costner version).
- Belle is just as strong a character as a lot of "Hero" types, who also
- react to their situations. Keep these things in mind: (1) Belle is a young
- woman living in what looks like 18th century provincial France--not really
- a time or place for a woman to show initiative and dynamic personality--
- look at everyone's opinion of her intellect to see how just trying to be
- a little bit educated was seen in a womam. (2) Belle agreed to take her
- father's place with the Beast. What did she know about him? This "thing"
- didn't care that Maurice was sick, maybe dying. "It" looked like nothing
- she'd ever seen, and the way she met "it" was kind of violent (like
- practically flinging her across the room). For all she knew, "it" was
- going to kill her. (3) Beast had been nothing but mean to her, yet, when
- she had her chance to escape, after he passed out following the wolf fight,
- she stayed with him and went back to the castle with him. That shows a
- pretty strong sense of character. A weak character would run and not look
- back, but Belle had enough sense of decency to "do the right thing" as it
- were. These are just a few examples of Belle's strength, not going into
- her having a mature enough sense to be herself despite all the pressure to
- conform, her ability to stand up to the whole town whipped into a fanatic
- mob by Gaston, and the courage to get to the castle as quickly as possible
- despite the townsfolk, to try to help the Beast. Belle is without a doubt
- one of the strongest characters Disney has ever made. Just because she's
- human and needs some help once in a while doesn't make her weak.
