- The Sherlock Holmes society at the University of Illinois shows this every
- year as part of their "Festival of Bad Taste" alongside such items as
- racist WB and Three Stooges shorts, other cigarette ads, and previews for
- Elvis movies. The Fred and Barney ad is one of the mainstays of the
- festival--the crowd has come to expect and love it.
-
- I don't expect anyone is really concerned about this, but just in case:
- *SPOILER WARNING* : I'm about to descibe the ad.
-
- The commercial starts out with Fred and Barney leaning on the fence between
- their yards, while their wives do various chores: if I remember right,
- Wilma is mowing and Betty is beating a rug.
-
- Barney: Y'know Fred, it really hurts me to see the girls working so hard.
- Fred: Yeah, I know what you mean. C'mon, let's go out back where we can't
- see 'em.
-
- The next few seconds are usually drowned out by laughter, cheers and jeers,
- but the jist of it is that Fred and Barney go to the backyard and light up
- while sitting against the house. They proceed to list the merits of their
- cigarette brand. Eventually, of course, the 'girls' find them and make them
- do their fair share. There's a closing bit where a narrator covers the
- great benefits of smoking again while showing Wilma and Fred lighting up
- inside their house at night.
-
- All in all, quite a treat.
