I started a marine tank on 08/01/92 in a 55g, UGF w/ 2 powerheads, large power filter, and standard 40W lamp. I added 6 blue damsels and the initial two months of cycling went fine. About a month into things, the brown diatoms showed up. They were quickly replaced with mainly purple algae although some bright green algae also showed up. The purple algae hasn't gone away. I talked with my fish store and they suggested adding an additional 40W lamp. I added a blue moon reef bulb two months ago and the purple
algae hasn't decreased. I do 20% water changes
every other week. The tank now has only a coral beauty and a hippo tang. Is the purple algae normal or should it eventually disappear.
