- Sometimes you want a news reader that can use NNTP to talk to multiple
- hosts to read/post news. For instance, my company has an internal set
- of newsgroups that are spooled on a different machine. It would be
- nice to use a single newsreader to read both the internal groups and
- the external groups.
-
- Right now, I have shell scripts that set environment variables to get
- rrn to talk to the other NNTP server.
-
- However, what are the issues/problems involved in having a news reader
- that talks to multiple NNTP servers concurrently? I would imagine the
- groups display would look like:
-
- ** 5 unread articles in ucbvax.berkeley.edu:ucb.general--read now? [ynq]
- ** 10 unread articles in es.com:general--read now? [ynq]
- etc.
-
- Has anyone looked into this idea? Or, better yet, does anyone know of
- a newsreader that does this already? I would think there would have
- to be some care taken with inews, .newsrc files, etc., to ensure
- consistency. When I post to different servers, I might want to
- maintain different options for the format of the messages and
- signature used. In my existing situation, my shell scripts set the
- envariable DOTDIR so that I can use a different signature, etc.
-
- If you've ever wanted to read regional hierarchies across the internet
- without having to arrange a local spool of the hierarchy (harder than
- just setting NNTPSERVER and DOTDIR), you know what I'm talking about.
