  15. This article is the 2nd CALL FOR VOTES on a reorganization of the comp.sys.sgi
  16. hierarchy. It is followed by an acknowledgemenf of votes received (taken
  17. from the From: line from the vote received).
  18.  
  19. Currently there is a single comp.sys.sgi that receives 50-70 messages a day.
  20. This split will break the group into subject areas to allow people to follow
  21. the areas that are of interest to them. The decisions on which subgroups
  22. are being proposed are the result of 3 RFD's that have occured over the
  23. past 4 months are so.
  24.  
  25. This proposal also details how the info-iris mailing list will be handled in
  26. light of the split of the comp.sys.sgi hierarchy. The details of how this
  27. will be handled is based on what the info-iris mailing list administrator is
  28. willing to provide. There is no vote on how the info-iris mailing list is
  29. handled. These changes will take effect, assuming the comp.sys.sgi hierarchy
  30. is split into several groups.

  38. Create comp.sys.sgi.
  39.   admin         Discussions of system administration issues. This would
  40.                 include issues such as kernel tuning, security, and networking.
  41.   announce      general announcements (conferences, user groups, ftp
  42.                 archives, etc)
  43.   apps          Discussions of various application packages , both those
  44.                 provided by SGI, as well as third party applications.
  45.   bugs          Discussions/posting of bugs found in the IRIX operating system.
  46.   graphics      Discussion of SGI graphics issues (i.e. X-windows, Inventor,
  47.                 Imagelib, GL, etc.) Postings should always be issues specific
  48.                 to using a SGI machine.
  49.   hardware      Discussion of hardware issues including connection of
  50.                 perhipherals.
  51.   misc          Anything else, that doesn't fit one of the above groups.

  53. All of the groups except .announce will be unmoderated. It is convention
  54. that a .announce group is moderated. I will serve as the moderator for
  55. the group (Matt Wicks, wicks@dcdmjw.fnal.gov).

  57. The following explains how the info-iris mailing list will be handled, assuming
  58. that the CFV results in a split of the comp.sys.sgi group:
  59.  
  60.  - There will remain one mailing list called info-iris@brl.mil. All of the
  61.    new comp.sys.sgi newsgroups would be fed to the mailing list. The admin of
  62.    info-iris is unwilling to maintain individual mailing lists for each
  63.    separate news group. The address for info-iris-request@brl.mil will be
  64.    maintained and is to be used to request additions or deletions to the
  65.    mailing list.
  66.  - New mailing addresses will be created for each new comp.sys.sgi group
  67.    (i.e. info-iris-apps@brl.mil, info-iris-graphics@brl.mil, etc.). Mail
  68.    sent to these addresses will go to the appropriate comp.sys.sgi group
  69.    as well as to the info-iris mailing list. When mail is sent to one
  70.    of these addresses, the Reply-To: field will be set accordinly to make
  71.    replying easier. For example, mail sent to info-iris-graphics@brl.mil will
  72.    have info-iris-graphics@brl.mil in the Reply-To: field.
  73.  - Mail sent to the address info-iris@brl.mil will be rejected and a
  74.    message will be returned to the sender informing them of the availability
  75.    of the individual info-iris-subject addresses. This will force people to
  76.    post to a specific news group and allow for all mail and news posting to
  77.    be cross posted.

  105. A valid vote must include a "yes", "no" or "abstain" for EACH proposed
  106. change.  Each proposed newsgroup creation renaming will stand on
  107. its own thus allowing a split of the comp.sys.sgi group, even if a specific
  108. proposed subgroup is unpopular.

  116.      The discussion with the last RFD began September 24, 1992 with its posting
  117.      in news.announce.newgroups. The discussion ended on November 2, 1992.

  121.      The vote will run through December 2, 1992.
  122.  
  123.      I will post a second Call For Votes, and possibly a list of
  124.      unreachable return addresses, during the voting period.  When the
  125.      vote is over, I will post the final results.

  127.  3.  Waiting Period:

  129.      I will observe the normal waiting period of five days from the
  130.      time that the final results appear in news.announce.newgroups.
  131.      During this time, people may report lost votes.

  135.      After the waiting period, the appropriate control messages for the
  136.      creation of any new groups will be issued.

  138. If all goes as planned, whatever parts of the reorganization that
  139. pass will take effect by December 15, 1992.
