- U.S. Series EE savings bonds are an excellent investment
- vehicle for a risk-averse investor. They are 100% safe.
- They provide a guaranteed minimum rate of return which is
- significantly above that currently offered on money-market
- mutual funds, and the rate varies upward if market conditions
- change. From a tax standpoint, they are delightful. Unless
- you actually cash them in or make an election otherwise, the
- interest earned on the bonds is tax-deferred. That's impor-
- tant because the "kiddy tax" is imposed on the unearned
- income of children under age 14 at their parents' rate. So,
- if you hold them until your child is 18, you can defer and
- compound interest for 17 years, and then pay federal income
- taxes at the child's rate on all of the accumulated income.
- They are exempt from all state income taxes.
