- * Attorney General quits in the wake of public criticism
-
- Mr G.Ramaswamy, the attorney general, resigned following intense public
- criticism of his role in the Rs35bn securities scam. According to his
- aids, he cited ill health as the reason for the resignation. But it was
- widely believed in New Delhi last night that he quit because of his
- connections with Standard Chartered Bank, the British owned bank which
- has suffered heavey losses in the scandal. Mr Ramaswamy is the third
- public figure to resign over the affair. Earlier Mr P.Chidambaram, the
- former commerce minister and Mr V.Krishna Murthy, a former member of the
- planning commission quit from their posts. Mr. Ramaswamy handled sensitive
- political cases including the assasination of Mrs Indira Gandhi. His
- involvement in the scam started with revelations that he was granted a
- Rs 150,000 unsecured overdraft facility by the Standard Chartered.
- Accusations followed that he had given legal advice to the bank about the
- scandal. Mr Ramaswamy admits he had a visit from Mr Barry Northop, the
- bank's special representative for India, but says it was a "courtesy call".
- Eventhough he denies any connections with the bank, some of Ramswamy's
- fellow lawyers are unconvinced and the Delhi High Court Bar Association
- has started action to end his membership. (FT)
