- It turned out that I didn't understand ADD. So the email that I got
- either asked for summaries, or explained the chemistry of ADD. Here is
- the best explanation, excerpted from the mail that I recieved:
-
- A proper medical diagnosis is made when a cat scan shows that the
- "control portion" of the brain is underdeveloped. The reason Ritalin
- and other stimulants, presumably including caffeine, work is that they
- stimulate the entire brain, including the control portion and the
- child is then able to control his/her behavior. Eventually the brain
- development catches up and the drugs are no longer necessary.
-
- It was also noted that kids are more prone to losing control as they get
- more tired. So presumably, caffiene stimulate their brains to get the
- control portion doing it's thing so they can settle down for sleep.
-
- Thanks for enlightening me!
