- I have heard of this approach being used with children who bite--"I
- just bite them back and then they know how it feels!" It has always
- appeared to be singularly ineffective (judging from the subsequent
- behavior of the biter) and it seemed to me that what the parent had
- actually succeeded in teaching the child was that grownups, too,
- indulge in this sort of behavior. Since our children are learning
- by imitating us, I would think that the message is less than clear to
- the child.
- I found it easier to just not wear earrings (which they also grab at)
- and keep my hair pulled back or cut short, so I could concentrate on
- keeping my glasses on my face. Babies also love to pull beards at
- that age so my husband, who has a beard, and kept it trimmed quite
- short during this phase, wouldn't have dared to object to my cutting
- my hair. (Not that he'd dare anyway ;-) )
