- I agree with Steven's description of how one might handle a toddler's
- screaming, but I have to add that I think my daughter is more persistent
- with her screaming than his two children were and are. I mean,
- she CAN go on for twenty minutes, despite all of my patient
- "You can't do that, but you can do this" messages and funny faces
- and offers of food and so on.
-
- I don't call them "timeouts," but when she's screaming for something
- she can't have, I say calmly but in a real "MOM" voice, "I'll talk
- to you when you've calmed down." Then I walk out of the room
- for about 15 or 20 seconds. This often makes her scream louder,
- but when I return, she lets me pick her up and hug her, and she
- almost always calms down and accepts whatever alternative I've
- presented. Lately, I've been resorting to my timeouts earlier
- in the process (say, after 2 minutes of trying to redirect her
- attention) because I'm trying to teach her to let go of her upset
- feelings faster. (I'm also trying to give my neighbors a break.
- Georgia sounds like she's being tortured when she's unhappy. :>( )

- Ain't toddlers fun? I've rediscovered my childhood with Play-Doh!
