- I just want to back up Susan's posting. I doubt that anyone wants to
- have an episiotomy, but let's face it, for all kinds of reasons many
- of us end up with them. Before my daughter was born, I was, frankly,
- terrified of getting an episiotomy. It was probably THE aspect of
- childbirth I was most anxious about: I'd heard all kinds of terrible
- stories about how awful they are. During delivery, I started to tear,
- and the doctor ended up doing an episitomoty. (Was it absolutely
- necessary? I'll never know for sure, but I generally trusted my
- doctor, who was by and large non-interventionist.)
-
- For me, as for Susan, the episiotomy turned out not to be that big a
- deal. I was moderately sore for about 48 hours, and fine thereafter.
- (And for what it's worth, like Susan I used ice in latex gloves.)
-
- Of course, this is only my personal experience; I'm sure that for some
- people the recovery is worse. And of course I think it's preferable
- to avoid episiotomies if possible. But I think it's useful for
- first-time mothers-to-be to realize that if they do end up with an
- episiotomy, for whatever reasons, it will not necessarily be too
- painful or cause any difficulties.
