- I hadn't been able to read "recreational" news for a few weeks and
- didn't know if this has been posted. Sorry if this is a repeat.
- Here's what I found out when I heard about the Century carseat recall
- and dialed their 800 number three weeks ago. This is a summarry of the
- information from Century.
-
- Century carseats affected:
-
- MODEL #'s 3000STE, 3500STE, 5000STE, 5500STE
-
- SERIAL #: Check the label on the carseat and
- you should see a number beginning with 4###, this is
- the serial number. Now, check for a part of it that
- may fall between 8909 and 9204. If yours falls within
- this range, write down that part of the serial number
- and proceed to with the recall 800 number. If it does
- not fall in this range, no need to call Century.
-
- OTHER CRITERIA: If your seat is very new, it may have a
- yellow sticker saying the release button has been upgraded,
- if so, you won't need to call your seat is already been
- retrofitted with the part.
-
- PHONE #: 1-800-231-2755
-
- HOURS: This is a ** 24 hr ** number, I called at
- 10 pm MST and got right through. During prime working hours
- was not able to get through. Save yourself the hassle and
- call in the evening!
-
- THE RECALL DETAILS: The operator has a statment and really
- no further info. Century has found in their crash testing
- of "a unique type of accident" the red release button
- (the button that releases the shield so child can be removed)
- rotates upward and will not release". Century says this has
- NEVER been reported in an actual accident, they are recalling
- based solely on their own tests. In the case of such accident
- until part is retrofitted, "a white plunger would now be exposed
- and can be used as a release mechanism". Or the entire seat
- can be removed from the vehicle. The indication is the chances
- of this happening is rare and the "recall" (actally sending a
- replacement part) is totally voluntary by Century.
-
- Century strongly encourages you to continue to keep your child in
- your carseat for their safety while waiting the part (supposedly
- 2-3 weeks, I haven't gotten ours yet at almost 3 weeks).
