  23. I would LIKE to have my daughter speak my native Arabic, however
  24. I am getting little success in doing so since my wife does not
  25. speak the language and our main mode of communication at home is
  26. English.  I visited my folks last summer when my daughter had just 
  27. turned two, and while she was only there for a month she was able
  28. to communicate with my parents and  her cousins and picked up a
  29. number of words like the equivalents of "give me" and the all
  30. too important "MINE", somehow she spotted that word right away ;-)
  31. So I am afraid I a will not be of much help other than suggesting
  32. you send your daughter back to your home for the summer where she
  33. will be forced to use the language when she is there.
  34. My cousins were half-germans, they went to a French school,
  35. but still were able to pick-up german from their home environment
  36. however, my uncle was fluent with german so in their house they were
  37. exposed to quite a bit of communication between my uncle and
  38. his german-born wife.
  39. I have many relatives that are in the same predicament, one of my
  40. cousins has succeded in getting his two year old to speak his native
  41. Arabic, by only addressing his son in Arabic, and refusing to answer
  42. any requests the child makes unless he says it in Arabic.  He tells
  43. me that it has worked for him and now his child knows to talk to daddy
  44. in one language and mommy in another.
  45. I would welcome any other suggestions.
