- Having had 2 episiotomies that tore (one a 4th degree (i.e. back to the
- rectum) and the other 3rd degree (still pretty big)) I thought I'd mention
- that the episiotomies and tears aren't necessarilay that big a deal.
- I was uncomfortable for a few days, but sat all day at work 3 days after
- the second baby (just for the day - baby was early and I had a big
- deadline). The worst part was
- that the doctors seem to sew me up tighter than I had been before. One
- of the nurses commented on it. Luckily, the first stitch popped out (I
- think).
-
- Be sure to put ice chips in latex glove on and switch the ice pack every
- 2 hours for the first 24-36 hours. Do NOT use the chemical cold packs
- instead - they don't work nearly as well. After that time, do sitz
- baths 2 - 3 times a day in as hot water as you can stand. The ice keeps the
- swelling down at first, then the heat promotes healing.
- One week after delivery, the episiotomies/tears really didn't bother me.
- In fact, the second one hurt more/longer than the first because I tried the
- silly cold packs instead of ice for the first few hours. They were next
- to useless and I had to insist on ice & gloves with some nurses. I guess
- that's more expensive so some nurses try to dissuade you. Other nurses
- say "Yeah, that's the only thing that works".
-
- BTW The first episiotomy was necessary because we needed the baby to get
- out with a vacuum extractor. Mom was exhausted. Not sure what caused
- episiotomy number 2 - just pushing too hard, doctor/mom in a hurry.
- At the end of a long labour I'm willing to trade an episiotomy for 15
- minutes less pushing.
