- With the doctor's blessing, I'm introducing my almost 4-month-old,
- Austin, to solids. (This is motivated by an only 3oz. gain in the
- last three weeks.) Now he gets 2-3 breastfeedings and 24 oz. of
- formula per day.
-
- We've tried cereal a few times with limited success over the last
- couple of weeks. He sort of tongues it around in his mouth and
- most of it comes back out. I thought he might be tongue-thrusting,
- which one book I read said meant he wasn't ready, but now I tried
- sweet potatoes and he is getting most of it.
-
- My questions concern technique and amount.
-
- 1. Technique: (Am I supposed to and) How do I get him to suck it
- off the spoon? My mom said he should be sort of sucking but right
- now there are no signs of it. So I sort of dump it in his mouth, he
- moves it around messily and swallows most of it, and then he opens
- his mouth again (by the way, he didn't open his mouth again right
- away for cereal so I think the sweet potatoes may be a hit).
- Any tips?
-
- 2. Amount: He's eating a tablespoon or so of half formula, half
- food per meal. How much does a four-month-old eat and how do you
- balance it with formula? Austin does not ask for food at all
- (this has led babysitters not to feed him for eight hours)
- and will only eat 32-35 oz. if you are feeding as much as possible
- during a day (this stat held for two days this week when I pumped
- instead of directly breastfeeding). How much did your infant eat
- and how did you know when he/she had enough?
-
- By the way, he weighs 16 lbs., has full control of his head, and
- can almost sit up. (I hear the head control is necessary.)
-
- So how did you parents of older children introduce solids?
-
- I'll summarize if there's enough interest. Thanks in advance!
