- [This is from the Chronic Pain Conference]
-
- continued from previous message...
-
- To be honest, I don't know whether W.C. says that or it's just the
- nurse. She's maintained a totally subjective and emotional stance
- about all of this.
-
- I made it clear that at this point, levels of disability aren't relevant
- and are totally subjective anyway. In other words, only I can decide
- this. I'm supported by a numb, paralyzed lower leg and foot which
- produces constant, usually intolerable burning pain.
-
- What's the difference between that and being supported by a prosthesis?
-
- Simply, if amputation doesn't work, I still don't have a useful leg,
- and I still have pain, perhaps worse.
-
- BUT, if it DID work, I'd have little or no pain, and still have support
- from a prosthesis.
-
- As cold and blunt as it may sound, the logic in all of this is so
- simple to ME.
-
- I told the nurse that I intend to do whatever is necessary within
- limits to eliminate this pain if at all possible.
-
- Her response was that "If you cannot work fulltime at your present
- job because of the pain, then you need to find a job where you can."!
-
- At that point, my wife became angry and asked "What do you want him
- to do, work at McDonald's"?
-
- The doctors WERE going to set up an appointment, promptly for the
- DCS test, but the nurse intervened and suggested to the psychologist
- that he give me an MMPI first.
-
- I have nothing to hide by taking the test, and I brought it home,
- filled it out, and mailed it back.
-
- What troubles me is that the nurse INFLUENCED the doctors' decision!
-
- I will or will not be given the DCS based on the results of the MMPI,
- thanks to the nurse.
-
- Finally, she stated that IF I receive the DCS (temporary) and it fails
- to give me relief, she is "closing my file".
-
- Today I called a couple of attorneys that specialize in W.C. cases
- and scheduled consultations for next week.
-
- I really don't want to sue anyone, and I'm not out for money or
- attention.
-
- All I want is to be treated fairly and to have my wishes and suggestions
- taken seriously.
-
- I've also mailed a letter to my family doctor, unknown to the nurse
- or the pain clinic folks, as a backup. In case the DCS doesn't work,
- I've asked my family doctor to help me find a surgeon, if he wants
- to.....continued next message...
