- Ok. I increased my verticle jump by 3.5" three years ago in order to compete
- in a jumping contest for charity. It took about 6 months ( I was also
- training for a bunch of other events at the time). I worked extensively on
- my legs with extra emphasis on the calf muscles. Your first responder was
- right on this one as far as my experience indicates.
-
- I also did three other things which combined or maybe individually (this
- is not a science) increased my jump:
-
- 1. Opposite Motion Training - I jumped down rather than up. I jumped off of
- things - small things to begin with - like chairs
- and then building up to swingsets, one story
- buildings, trucks.
-
- 2. Spring Enhanced Training - I jumped off of diving boards, but I also
- jumped up. This up and then down and then up
- down again motion really helped. I also worked
- on trampolines.
-
- 3. Resistance Training - I jumped against tension. I had a huge rubber band
- like thing that went from under a platform and
- around my shoulders. It made it hard for me to jump.
- I increased tension like you increase weight when
- you try to build muscle. I did 8 sets of 15 reps
- every day for six days. On the eighth day I increased
- the tension (again, I am no kind of fitness expert -
- only a well-practiced novice).
-
- I also made a few other changes which I think had an effect. These may be
- purely psychosomatic. DO not underestimate the mental element. Jumping off
- buildings was a big thing for me. I learned total confidence during the jump.
- The other changes: pancakes. THere is something about pancakes that increases
- performance - carbs yes - but there is something else - maybe something
- chemical? maybe it was a religious experience. I don't know. They work. I
- totally believe in pancakes.
-
- One other thing: I played A LOT of basketball. I played on raised rims. At
- first it was very destructive for the little ego, but she learned to deal with
- it. I also went to elementary schools and played on lower rims - the first
- time I ever slamdunked (and the only time :) ).
-
- I think that's 'bout it. Again, none of this has any literature references.
- I experimented by myself. Some of what I did was unsafe. All of what I did
- was a total blast. And I won the contest.
-
- Happy Jumping!
