- I have an older (1938) two bedroom house with a full basement. Total finished
- space is 980 ft^2, according to the last owner. I installed a programmable
- thermostat a few years ago, setting back the normal 68F temperature to 60 during
- the day and 65 at night. My total natural gas bill for the year, *including*
- hot water for kitchen, bathing and laundry, was about $400.
-
- I'm told you want to avoid too far a setback as it takes more energy to bring
- the house back up to temperature. I don't know what the factors involved are,
- but was told that the gas company recommends no more than 10 degrees. On extended
- vacations you can go further; I set it back to about 50.
