- IMHO, the only reason that there has been any improvement in U.S. cars has
- been because of the success of the Japanese cars in our market. I think it's
- a Good Thing (tm) that such a message was sent to U.S. automakers. As you
- note above, it seems that they have received the message and are even acting
- on it. I think that people who are looking for quality cars should check
- out what the U.S. automakers have to offer now. If you compare apples to
- apples and still find the Japanese apple better, by all means buy it. On
- the other hand if you think the U.S. product would serve you better, don't
- be afraid to buy that one. It's all well and good to send a negative message
- when you think they're doing things wrong (I was right there doing it with
- you), but it's just as important to send a positive message when you think
- they are doing things right.
-
- Some people are proud to buy-U.S.-no-matter-what, but I think that's mis-
- guided. Buy U.S. when their product is the one that _best_suits_your_needs_
- and you'll be taking an active role in ensuring that U.S. manufacturers
- will produce better and better products. My wife and I were pleasantly
- surprised when we checked out what Saturn had to offer, and I was proud
- to buy a Saturn because I knew what a clear message that purchase was
- sending to _both_ U.S. _and_ Japanese automakers. The message was that
- we're not some sort of automatons that will buy only U.S. or only Japanese
- products no matter what. The message was that we'll buy the best car for
- us and that our needs shouldn't be taken for granted by the monolithic
- automakers no matter what country they hail from.
-
- Too many people won't even consider a U.S. automobile... IMHO they're
- just as misguided as the people who wouldn't consider anything else.
-
- Just my $0.02 (or so)...
