- GUATEMALA
- The Guatemalan President, Jorge Serrano, was unharmed Nov 18 in a
- rocket attack thought to have been carried out by guerrillas on the
- presidential ranch, Santo Tomas, located 35 kms south of the
- capital.
-
- According to military sources, the attack was carried out by the
- Guatemalan National Revolutionary Army. It is not known whether the
- president was at the ranch at the time of the attack.
-
- This is the second attack on Serrano. His plane was fired upon in
- Jan, 1991, when it flew over the town of Peten. (Spanish Radio

- EL SALVADOR
- Hundreds of leftist guerrillas handed in their guns Nov 20 in El
- Salvador's UN mediated peace process. Despite the opposition of the
- middle range of commanders, guerrilla leaders said they would
- demobilize rebels at camps around the country on Nov 20 and 21.
-
- On Guazapa volcano, a central point of combat throughout the 12-
- year civil war in El salvador, FMLN rebels have registered with UN
- peace keepers and turned in their arms.
-
- Only 35% of the FMLN's 8,000-strong fighting force will remain in
- arms. Under UN supervision, the FMLN is scheduled to complete its
- demobilization by Dec 15. The UN peace accords require the
- government of Alfredo Cristiani to simultaneously carry out
- extensive land transfers, electoral and judicial reforms, and to
- reduce El Salvador's army size. (Spanish Radio 11/20)
-
- This is the fourth stage of the FMLN's demobilization process,
- which must be completed before Dec 15. Only 600 rebels will lay
- down their arms between Nov 20-21. Eleven hundred others will
- follow suit over the coming weeks.
-
- The FMLN is cautious as far as its demobilization is concerned
- after the government announced it was sending troops to protect the
- coffee harvest in areas under guerrilla control during the war.
- Under the peace accords, the Salvadoran army is to remain within
- its bases. (R. Havana 11/20)

-
- NICARAGUA
- The Nicaraguan government of President Violeta Chamorro and the
- opposition Sandinista Front agreed Nov 20 to work together to
- resolve disputed property claims, a thorny issue which has led to
- a freeze in US aid.
-
- According to the finance minister, the two sides have agreed to
- create a joint commission to study the cases of those people whose
- property was unjustly confiscated and should be returned. (Spanish
- Radio 11/20)
