- Cuba Caravan Arrives at Mexican Border
-
- from WBAI-FM New York, Thursday, November 19
-
-
- CUBAN FRIENDSHIPMENT ARRIVES AT MEXICAN BORDER
-
- The 44 vehicles and 104 people participating in US-Cuba
- Friendshipment, have arrived at the Laredo, Texas-Mexican border.
- Tom Hansen, spokeman for the caravan, spoke via telephone on
- WBAI. He said the Mexican government has expidited paperwork for
- the group and exonerated them of all fees. They will receive a
- police escort for the twelve-hour drive to Tampico, where the
- material aid -- powdered milk, bicycles, medicines, school
- supplies and bibles -- will be loaded aboard a Cuban freighter.
- The Mexican stevedors' union has agreed to load to aid for free,
- and the City of Tampico will open its civic center to the participants
- for the two days they will spend in there.
-
- Upon reading that the United States government may try to
- prevent the caravan from crossing the Mexican border and could,
- in fact, arrest the participants, seventeen members of the
- European Economic Community have sent a letter to the US
- government asking them to allow the caravan to go through. The
- letter pointed out the suffering of the Cuban people as a result
- of the more than thirty year US imposed old embargo, and said the
- to prevent the aid from going to Cuba would be a violation of
- human rights.
