  17.  Springfield Boycott in Oregon

  19. Despite the failure of Ballot Measure Nine, Oregon still has the nation's first
  20. anti-gay ordinance, which passed earlier in the year in the logging town of
  21. Springfield.  Measure 20-08 bans laws that protect gays and lesbians from
  22. discrimination, as well as prevents the city of Springfield from "facilitating"
  23. homosexuality.

  25. Loretta Neet, local sponsor of the measure for the Oregon Citizen's Alliance
  26. (OCA), claims that the ban has had no adverse effects to Springfield.  Scott
  27. Lively, OCA Spokesperson, claims that Springfield has experienced a growth
  28. spurt since passage of Measure 20-08.  Springfield's Mayor Bill Morrisette
  29. claims that the initial outrage over the measure has subsided, and that they
  30. receive only letters of praise for their pioneering work in discrimination. Lon
  31. Mabon, Executive Director of the OCA, has pledged to export their anti-gay
  32. legislation to neighboring states, including Washington and California.

  34. Both Loretta and Mayor Bill have stated that they just want their little city
  35. to be left alone, so they can administer their hate laws away from the glare of
  36. the media.  Please join the rest of Oregon in continuing to remind Springfield
  37. that legislated hatred will not be tolerated.  If you have the opportunity to
  38. visit Springfield, it lies at the southern end of the Willamette valley, 2
  39. hours south of Portland and just across the freeway from the far more tolerate
  40. city of Eugene.  Stores that honor diversity will have signs in their windows.
