- Frustrated by the continuing nuclear arms race and its toxic
- by-products, citizens groups worldwide are responding by organ-
- izing nuclear free zones in their communities. More than 4200
- free zones now exist in 23 countries. Major American cities,
- including Chicago and Oakland (CA), have declared themselves
- "nuclear free"--legally banning or regulating all nuclear
- materials.
- FREE ZONE is the first film to document the growing inter-
- national nuclear free zone movement. Experts, activists, and
- elected officials from a dozen countries explain the motivation
- for pursuing this innovative strategy, while military leaders
- and others question its wisdom. The film also provides a useful
- overview of the economic and environmental consequences of the
- arms race and raises fundamental questions about the sacrifice
- of basic democratic freedoms in the name of national security.

- A DREAM OF PEACE 1989 * 12 min.
- ----------------
- Produced by New Zealand Foundation for Peace Studies
-
- >VHS Sale $29.95
-
- In 1987 the entire country of New Zealand became a "nuclear
- free zone," banning nuclear ships from the country's ports. The
- move was denounced by the United States government and hailed by
- anti-nuclear activists worldwide. A DREAM OF PEACE is a closer
- look at the motivations and historical developments that led to
- New Zealand's nuclear free declaration. Through archival news
- footage and interviews with key leaders, including former Prime
- Minister David Lange, the video describes the events surrounding
- the declaration and its significance for other countries. A
- DREAM OF PEACE is an account of events in one small country, but
- it raises large questions which may be fundamental to the sur-
- vival of all people. A good discussion starter for peace
- organizing.

- THE TURNING POINT 1987 * 29 min.
- -----------------
- Produced by Swedish Educational Broadcasting Corp.
-
- >VHS Sale $45. Rent $30.
-
- Set in the year 2007, THE TURNING POINT depicts a fictional
- conversation between a grandfather and his grandchild. Through
- collections of photographs and film taken during his lifetime,
- the grandfather shows how the world took its first major steps
- toward world peace and the elimination of poverty and injustice.
- The first part of this creative film is an excellent history
- illustrating the world events after World War II that led to a
- major crisis in the '80's. That crisis was followed by "the
- turning point" in the 1990's. The grandfather emphasizes that
- it was ordinary people that caused the change, and he turns over
- to his grandson the responsibility to complete the hopeful pro-
- cess that has begun. An inspiring program that leaves the viewer
- filled with a sense of possibility. Good for children and
- adults. (IN ENGLISH)

- Resolving the major problems of today requires an informed and
- active citizenry. Is our educational system preparing students to
- be responsible, aware citizens? Increasingly, educators believe
- our schools need to teach students how to think critically about
- important global issues. PREPARING FOR THE 21ST CENTURY focuses
- on an inspirational high school teacher who for 18 years has taught
- his students to think critically about the ultimate issues of our
- time--war, peace, and resolving human conflict. The video com-
- bines lively, engaging classroom sessions with insights into Mr.
- Halstead's positive impact from students, parents, and other fac-
- ulty. A unique and exciting demnonstration of the importance of
- making critical thinking a national educational priority.

- TOWARD A GOVERNED WORLD 1988 * 27 min.
- -----------------------
- Produced by Telecosm
-
- >VHS Sale $35. Rent $35.
-
- How to abolish all forms of war--not just nuclear weapons--
- is the ultimate challenge for humanity. This highly informative
- documentary proposes that the abolition of war and injustice is
- possible through the establishment of a democratic global govern-
- ment--a fedaration of nations. That government would have the
- power to outlaw war, alleviate poverty, and protect the planet's
- environment. The video illustrates this bold solution through a
- creative format--historical footage and graphics are mixed with
- questions posed by people on the street to three prominent world
- government advocates. Included throughout are statements by such
- well-known advocates of world government as Albert Einstein and
- Justice William O. Douglas. A good introduction to this impor-
- tant concept.
-
- "The film is done with high professionalism and is as re-
- warding as it is important."
- --Norman Cousins, Former Editor, Saturday Review

- SOLUTIONS FOR THE 21ST CENTURY takes a positive look at the
- potential to resolve the most critical global problems: nuclear
- war, environmental devastation, and poverty. The concerned ex-
- perts in this hopeful video start by putting these problems in

- and structures they believe are needed. Concrete steps that can
- be taken in the next 10 to 15 years are proposed, as well as
- specific actions that individuals can take now. Finally, the
- film identifies public apathy as the greatest obstacle to solve-
- ing these problems. Among the experts featured are: Norman
- Cousins, author; Nick Dunlop, Director, Parlimentarians Global
- Action; Patricia Mische, Global Education Associates; Barbara
