  21. Historian Francis Jennigs, in his book, THE INVASION OF AMERICA 
  22. (NY, 1976), said the effect of European contact with the Americas 
  23. was a catastrophe. "The American land was more like a widow than 
  24. a virgin. Europeans did not find a wilderness here: rather they 
  25. made one," Jennings writes.

  27. When the Pilgrims arrived in Massachusetts, they found a land 
  28. already devastated by the epidemics brought by Europeans. 
  29. Jennings quotes reliable estimates that the death rate among 
  30. Native AMericans was 50-90 percent.

  32. Pious, "patriotic" nonsense aside, all the European settlers 
  33. including the Pilgrims came here for capitalist reasons. The 
  34. Pilgrims in fact were members of a capitalist corporation formed 
  35. in England to make profits by the fur trade.

  37. In 1763 the French were defeated by the English. Native Americans 
  38. were no longer needed by the Englist as allies. It is precisely 
  39. at this time - although it must have occured repeatedly earlier - 
  40. that we find the first records of the English selling Native 
  41. Americans blankets in which smallpox victims had died.

  43. Genocide, slavery, biological warfare -- all these are part of 
  44. the history of the invasion of America. Some people however, will 
  45. argue they were necessary so that progress could occur. It is the 
  46. old idea of "the cut worm forgives the plow" all over again.

  48. In his book, EVER SINCE DARWIN (1977), (biologist, Stephen Jay 
  49. Gould), Gould writes on social Darwinism that "this discredited 
  50. theory ranked human groups and cultures according to their 
  51. assumed level of evolutionary attainment, with (not surprisingly) 
  52. white Europeans at the top and people dwelling in their conquered 
  53. colonies at the bottom."

  55. In order to tackle the problem of the invasion of America, 
  56. Marxists need to go back to basics. Capitalist society, of all 
  57. socieities, has the sharpest of class antagonisms: the working 
  58. class creates all wealth and therefore is responsible for 
  59. material progress, but the gang of criminals known as capitalists 
  60. appropriates this wealth and uses it as it sees fit - for 
  61. genocide, slavery, forcing opium on China, etc. Workers certainly 
  62. have a responsibility to history here, just as Germans born after 
  63. 1945 have a responsibility to their history, but neither is 
  64. guilty of crime.
