- NEWS BRIEFS:
-
- CHARGES: National Communications Secretary Ernesto Altschul said
- on November 6 that "the extreme left-wing has mounted a campaign of
- rumors about coups d'etat in order to discredit the government and
- generate a crisis." He said it was "ridiculous and crazy" to speak
- of coups within the Armed Forces, because the institution is
- committed to fulfilling all the peace accords. Altschul called
- statements made in the U.S. by a member of the Ad Hoc Commission
- about coup attempts "irresponsible, especially when he has been
- charged with a very delicate task." Defense Minister Rene Emilio
- Ponce also claimed that a campaign has been launched by Communists
- to discredit the Armed Forces and top military leaders, with the
- goal of obstructing the peace process. "Setting up clear enemies of
- peace can only be part of the conspiratorial plans of the left-wing
- politicians who, when this country returns to normal, will see
- their economic privileges, travel and other accustomed 'bargains'
- endangered," said the military chief.
-
- LEGISLATURE: The Legislative Assembly agreed to speed up the
- process of passing laws related to aspects of the peace process.
- The Democratic Convergence proposed a schedule to pass ten related
- laws by December 19. The proposal received the support of all
- parties, and included a motion to hold extraordinary sessions once
- a week in order to speed up passage of the laws.
-
- EL MOZOTE: The Attorney General's office reported that it has
- assigned seven prosecutors to the investigation underway to clear
- up the El Mozote massacre of December 1981. The prosecutors are on
- the staff of the Public Defender's Office for Human Rights. The
- head of this office, Carlos Mauricio Fonseca, also visited the site
- where the remains of the massacre's victims are being exhumed,
- where he said: "here we are investigating the massification of
- violations of the right to life, and given the level of national
- and international concern about the case, we are intervening as
- Legal Auditors on the basis of our legal right to do so."
-
- COMMUNIQUE: The Armed Forces High Command, in a communique
- published November 7, denied recent rumors of a coup arising from
- statements made by a former member of the Ad Hoc Commission,
- Eduardo Molina Olivares, and reiterated its support for the
- Cristiani government. "The Armed Forces is a permanent institution
- at the service of the nation, and is subordinated to the authority
- of the President of the Republic, as Commander-in-Chief, and as
- such, is an obedient, professional, apolitical and non-deliberative
- institution," said the communique. The High Command also denied
- that the Ad Hoc Commission report had produced any discontent
- within the Armed Forces.
