- PRISON HUNGER STRIKE ENDS IN AGREEMENT IN ISRAEL
-
- [Peace Media Service] A hunger-strike launched September 28 by
- Palestinian prisoners ended October 15 when negotiators at Israel's
- Nahfa Prison approved the principles of an accord accepted a week
- earlier at four other prisons. The Israeli Prison Service
- Authorities promised major improvements in living conditions in all
- prisons and accepted the principle of unified treatment. A final
- agreement is still being drafted. One participant in the fast,
- Hussain Nimeer A'beedat, died October 14.
-
- The Mandela Institute in Ramallah said that ``the Israeli
- authorities seem to be sincere in addressing and implementing [the
- agreed on changes].'' The Institute welcomed the ``more discerning
- attitude on the part of prison officials.'' [Mandela Institute,

- ISRAEL: RAMYA RECEIVES NEW EVICTION NOTICE
-
- [Peace Media Service] Residents of Ramya, an unrecognized Arab
- village in the Galilee and home to 20 Arab families, had been
- ordered by Israeli authorities to vacate their homes and land by
- November 3 but continuing appeals and protests have resulted in
- suspension of the order. Another round of negotiations is planned.
- Villagers may be incorporated into the nearby town of Carmiel or
- give up their land and be transferred to other State-owned land in
- the Galilee. The nearby Jewish town of Carmiel plans to build a
- neighborhood for new immigrants on Ramya's land.
-
- The eviction notice was delivered one week prior to the resumption
- of the Middle East peace talks. According to the Ramya Resident's
- Committee, ``The government must make it crystal clear whether its
- goal is apartheid or equality, in deeds and not only words.''
-
- The village of Ramya has attracted attention in Israel and abroad
- for over a year after being slated for demolition in September
- 1991.
-
- The Ramya villagers are farmers who have held legal title to their
- land since British Mandate times. Ramya is one of more than 100
- Palestinian unrecognized villages in Israel. The villages do not
- receive any government services.
-
- ``The policy of building housing for one class of citizens (Russian
- Jewish immigrants) by dispossessing a second class of citizens
- (Israeli Arabs),'' said Seth Grimes of the Jewish Committee for
- Israeli-Palestinian Peace in Washington D.C., ``is neither morally
- nor politically wise.''
