- Title: LATIN AMERICA: 15 MILLION CHILDREN LIVE IN THE STREETS
-
- rio de janeiro, nov 9 (ips) -- in latin america 15 million
- children live in the streets, the u.n. children's fund (unicef)
- reported here monday.
-
- unicef's director for latin america and the caribbean, marta
- maurat, told a meeting of regional tv network representatives
- that international aid ''should be only the last recourse in this
- case.''
-
- first of all, she said, it was necessary to ''make more
- efficient use of the resources which the states involved already
- have.''
-
- second, the private sector of the regional economies could
- ''do much more'' for the needy and homeless children, she said.
-
- the meeting was sponsored by the 'globo' tv network--the
- biggest in brazil and fourth biggest in the world.
-
- in a report circulated at the meeting, unicef outlined the
- dramatic situation which affects many latin american children,
- and said that about one million of them die each year of diseases
- that can be cured.
-
- another five million suffer from malnutrition and many more
- are homeless and live in the streets.
-
- the meeting will end tuesday, when there will be a
- presentation of the so-called 'rio charter' which commits the
- tv news media to provide time in the their news bulletins to
- highlight the plight of poverty-stricken and homeless children.
