  24. I did that to the tar file to get it out. But go tar -xfv tar.tar 
  25. and all sorts of other files (like spreadsheet.file.ascii) appear. 
  26. My OS truncates that to 14 chars, so any file which isn't unique 
  27. in the first 14 chars gets overwritten.

  29. Now if there was some way to edit file names *within* the tar file, that
  30. might be something.
