- Hi Laura. Nice to hear form you again. Your latest message seemed a lot
- more positive so I guess things are working out for you in your process
- classroom. I agree with you about reading with the kids. I have done it
- too. Some of the kids have criticized me for it though. They think I should
- spend that time marking other work so they can get it back quicker. You can't
- win. :-)
-
- It took me several weeks to conference with all sixty students and and to go
- over all of their pieces of wqriting with them. I've been reading Linda
- Rief's book, though, and she has a good suggestion. You get the kids to
- choose a couple of pieces of writing (I think five is too many) and then have
- them write a history of each piece. They then give themselves three grades
- on each piece, one for process, one for content and one for mechanics. That
- way a lot of your work is done for you at the evaluatrion conference. You
- just have to read the pieces beforehand and then give a mark. That doesn't
- even have ot be in a conference if you don't have the time. You then take an
- average of the student and teacher marks. Confused? Don't be. I made it
- sound more big of a deal than it really is.
-
- I will be doing my next marking period in two weeks and I'll let you know
- how I make out.
-
- About regular conferences ... I started posting a sign up sheet for students
- to request conferences. It hasnb't solved my problem about seeing everybody,
- but at least I'm seeing the ones who really feel they need help. I've
- noticed a lot of peer conferences taking place and that is very rewarding.
-
- Gotta run. The bell's about to ring and I have duty. Write back when you
- get a chance.
-
- John
