The University of Texas at El Paso is sponsoring the lastest K12 Net node to be added to the network. The "College of Education" K12 Net BBS is now operating from the Mathematics Laboratory on the fourth floor of the education building. Pre-service teachers (education majors) will be encouraged to participate in this environment.
While universities usually promote the big networks, it is nice to know that there is room for independent grassroots efforts. It has taken almost a year to maneuver through the bureaucracy to make this
new K12 Net node a reality. The College of Education K12 Net node
1:381/94 makes the fifth system available to callers in the El Paso area. Two more systems, one at a middle school and one at an elementary school, will be online in December. We have recently gone through a local grant writing process through which teachers could apply for classroom and/or school-wide project funding. From a pool of 3 million dollars, almost 20 percent of the funding went to technologically oriented proposals. Many teachers applied for computers, modems, and telephone lines. Soon, te
achers like Carol Hooper, Debbie Roth and others will have the access for their students that they have desired for so long. By January, our district will have installed over 50 new phonelines and modems for instructional use. I think 1993 is going to be a busy K12 Net year.
