> How are teachers being affected by crime in the
> schools?
I teach in Escondido, CA, a northern "suburb" of San Diego. First of all, all teachers have been told not to be in our classrooms after dark. If we are there after dark or on weekends, we should be there in pairs...more than one of us on campus. We are to keep our doors locked at all times when on campus after school hours. BTW...this is on the elementary school level.
We have children of gang members in our classrooms. Dealing with the parents is a lesson in diplomacy...how to tell the parents what they need to hear without angering them. Most parents, one on one, aren't too bad to deal with...at least on the kindergarten level.
I've never been threatened by a student or parent, except the occasional "I'll sue you!" when I've had to discipline. (Since I'm covered by professional insurance, I don't really worry about the suing part.)
