- HI LInda -- our entire province has integrated special needs children in the
- regular classrooms. This has been the case of r anumber of years now. We
- try to modify our programs for those students without withdrawing them from
- the classroom. Most of our classes are in the area of 30 students (at least
- at the junior high level). We have resource help from specialists when we
- need it, but WE are ultimately responsible for their learning. It gets a
- little frustrating at times, but I think it has been agood move. The
- "regular" children now are very sensitive to special needs students. They
- are also very protective of them. We have teach assistants in the classroom
- when we have severely handicapped children, but that is the exception rather
- than the rule. Mostly we just modify the work to suit each student.
-
- In our program we don't really rely on resource people. We take each child
- where we find him or her anyway, so special needs students are no different
- than the others. Everybody is working at their own rate to begin with.
-
- I hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. I'm not an
- authority on integration, but I can give you a feel for what is happening
- here.
