John, we are a K-6 elementary school in which one classroom at each grade level has been designated as a collaborative classroom. Our definition of collaborative is to have all of the special needs children in one classroom along with regular education children. This allows the special education teacher, the speech teacher, reading tutor, Title V (Native American) tutor, etc. to work in the child's classroom rather than having a pull-out program. The teachers involved in this are frustrated due to the la
ck of adequate training and concern for the students with higher ability in their classrooms. These classrooms were intended to have no more than 20 students but with an influx of new students some are over 25. Small class size seems to work best for special needs students.
