  11. HI Carol.  Inter Ed is anew project at our school.  We are a group of three 
  12. teachers working together with a clas of 60 students.  The students are a mix 
  13. of Grades 7, 8 and 9, with a wide range of abilities.  We occup a double 
  14. classroom and od a lot of cooperative activites.  The premise is that 
  15. students learn at their own rates, and that given time and freedom, they will 
  16. master all of the require doutcomes.  Our classroomm is more noisy and active 
  17. than most, as students are working on different things at on time. For 
  18. example, in math one student might be working on an Intgers unit while 
  19. another might be doing measurement.  We don't do very much traditional 
  20. teaching (i.e. standing up in the front of the classroom and explaining 
  21. concepts).  The students sign contracts to help each other and to receive 
  22. help.  We give small group seminars as the need arises.  We have found it to 
  23. be a very good approach to take with this number of students.  The kids enjoy 
  24. the freedom and most  have flourished in this setting.  We have ost three 
  25. students who felt they would function better in a normal classroom, but there 
  26. is no lack of others who want to get in.

  28. We organize ourselves on a thematic basis.  Our first theme was The 
  29. Environment and we tried to integarate as much as possible so that science, 
  30. social studeies and language arts are all combined.  It's sort of confusing 
  31. until you see it in action, but basically it is a pretty simpmle model.  Our 
  32. secondn theme was CANADA and we are trying to do the same type of thing.

  34. Our Humanities section is largely a process oriented writing and reading 
  35. workshop.  We are struggling with the fine arts seciont of Humanities, but 
  36. this is only because of a lack of time.   Next year we will hopefully have a 
  37. fourth teacher with an extra 30 or so students and I will then be able to do 
  38. more art and music with the students.

  40. I am so happy to be a part of this project.  I am now doing everything that 
  41. I hoped I would be allowed to do when I took my teacher training.  I know 
  42. this might sound confusing.  It might be easier if I just6 answer your 
  43. questions about the program rather than try to explain it all to you.
