- Belated Greetings from the Pacific Northwest! My apologies for being
- away from the Echo so long. Last week was parent conferences so we
- had a strange schedule with noon dismissals most of the week and a
- Veteran's Day holiday on Wednesday! On top of that I ran a book sale
- as a fund raiser for the library. We had a dismal turn out. Oh well.
-
- It was wonderful to read all the exciting facts about your students.
-
- I'm in the process of getting some introductions online. I'll work
-
- hard and try to get them up by the week's end.
-
- Thank you for the details on ANZAC Day. Our holiday was pretty
-
- much business as usual. Military parades and a lot of flag waving.
- Most of my students are indifferent, despite our principals sermon
-
- after the flag salute Tuesday morning. Do New Zealanders make some
- kind of pledge to the flag?
-
- Your weather sounds so beautiful. Almost all the leaves are gone
-
- from our trees. The temperature drops a little more each week. Our
- marine climate zone keeps it from getting too bad in the winter.
- We just get a lot of rain. If luck turns our way, we'll have maybe
- a week of snow sometime in late January. Gaston is situated near
- the foothills of the Coast Range, a mountain stretch that runs the
- entire West Coast. Our location ensures school closure during inclement
- weather. Many of our kids come from Cherry Grove, a small, rural
- community on the way to no where, which is nestled right at the base
- of the coast range mountains. If the school bus can't make it, school
- is cancelled. Two years ago, we had an extra week of Christmas vacation
- because of snow and ice. Last year we didn't get a single day off
- because of bad weather. What a bummer! There are few things better
- in life than getting to sleep in on a cold winter morning!
-
- There is so much to tell you about our Gaston. This last weekend
-
- I slogged through a local valley to view some ancient petroglyphs
- made by Gaston's first residents. The rock carvings have been dated
- back hundreds of years. Few people in Oregon know about them as they
- are on private land. Our guide speculated that the natives used the
- location as a place for the spirit quest. The sandstone bank is located
- high on a hillside overlooking a beautiful river valley. My soul
- stirs when I think about what our community must have looked like
- back then. There is this shiver that goes down one's spine when the
- past becomes so alive.
-
- Thanks again for all the introductions. Ours will follow soon.
-
- I'll share more details about the professional side of things in
-
- the messages to come.
-
- Peace! Phil
