Thank you for your great information about Inverness, the Cabot trail and the Bay of St Lawrence. We can really identify with dirt roads, hairpin bends and mountainous roads.We have them in various places locally.
We can also identify with your Scots heritage. Dunedin also has a predominantly Scots past.Dunedin was first settled in 1848 and began to boom with the finding of gold in the 1860 and 70's in the hinterland area. Huge numbers of settlers arrived from Scotland during the gold rushes.
Dunedin is a Gaelic name. It is supposed to mean Long may your lumrick <Forgive the spelling>... or long may your
chimney smoke. Obviously the forbears were people of some
wit even if they do stare with incredible solemnity in old
photos down off the walls of the Early Settlers Museum. They were referring to the changeable and often chilly weather that Dunedin frequently experiences. In fact I think they chose Dunedin because the place reminded them of their origins.
When I was in Scotland I thought our summers were just like theirs.
Robert Burns is a revered poet here. An imposing statue of him resides in our town centre which is an octagonal shape
and is locally known as " The Octagon. " There is an active
Burns Club locally and Burns' poem An Ode to the Haggis is often enacted with the appropriate ceremony before solemn functions.
Many Dunedin Streets are named after streets in Edinburgh. It is quite a homely feeling to walk around Edinburgh seeing similar types of buildings and street names.
Many people partake in Scottish activities here which includes Pipe bands, Highland dancing, Highland games and lets not forget the drinking of the malt. Yes a local whisky is brewed here .... under the labels Wilson's Southern Comfort and 45 South.
This is my second attempt at this message today. Our system shut down earlier and we lost a lot of work. My guess is that it was child activated but no one is going to own up.
We have to close down shortly as we are using this system to
distance access another school's CD ROM using the PC Commute function. This has so far been sometimes successful and sometimes not. Unfortunately we had some childrens replies to Amanda and Chrissy that got lost in the shut down. I don't think we will have time to get them redone again today. Hope they can be patient for just a bit longer.
