- I agree with one of your main points: namely, that leadership by
- example is the core of military leadership- and that by extension
- someone who can't lead by example isn't fit to be commander in chief.
-
- On the other hand, I believe that Clinton has the right idea with
- respect to integrating the armed forces. He's already stated that he
- intends to allow women, and homosexuals, the full range of career
- opportunities available to straight males in the military.
-
- I disagree with some aspects of this policy; to wit, I don't think women
- belong in infantry units or aboard warships- yet. Maybe events will
- change my mind. Less than 50 years ago, we still had racially
- segregated military units, and that certainly seems horribly backwards
- to us today.
-
- Today's "all-volunteer" military is a professional force. I expect my
- fellow servicemen, and women, to be professional and to meet the
- performance standards imposed by cognizant commanders. In this case,
- being a professional means accepting people of different backgrounds
- and lifestyles _and evaluating them on their ability_, not whether
- they have the same tastes or lifestyle as I do.
-
- In any event, the Pentagon is in for a big surprise. I can't say they
- don't deserve it. Desert Storm and the whole Tailhook imbroglio showed
- IMHO that the DoD has talked the talk but that they haven't yet
- progressed to walking the walk.
