  14. The program recode is now available on prep.ai.mit.edu, in directory
  15. pub/gnu, as file recode-3.2.4.tar.Z.
  16.  
  17. This tool has the purpose of recoding various character sets to one
  18. another.  Recoding is currently possible between any pair of these
  19. character sets:
  20.  
  21.   * usual 7-bit ASCII: without any diacritics, or else: using
  22.   backspace for overstriking; Unisys' ICON convention; TeX/LaTeX
  23.   coding; easy French conventions for electronic mail;
  24.  
  25.   * 8-bit extensions to ASCII: ISO Latin-1, IBM's code for the PC,
  26.   Apple's code for the Macintosh;
  27.  
  28.   * 6-bit escaped ASCII based on CDC display code: 6/12 code from NOS;
  29.   bang-bang code from Universite' de Montre'al;
  30.  
  31.   * non-ASCII codes: EBCDIC as seen by Perkin Elmer; EBCDIC as seen by
  32.   Control Data.

  34. By making recode available outside the context for which it has been
  35. developped, it is likely that people would add support for other
  36. character sets, in particular for taking care of various national
  37. European habits.
  38.  
  39. We still have to see how recode will evolve in this wider context.
