- I just got a request from management to find out what the throughput
- would be like if we provide access to our Motif based application via
- a modem. It looks like (correct me if I'm wrong) we have these choices:
-
- 1. use an X-Window terminal that can hooked via the serial line.
- Graphon and HDS are two vendors that I know of, are there any
- others?
-
- 2. have a workstation at the remote site and use SLIP, CSLIP, or
- PPP to network to our workstation and pass info between them.
-
- One of the major tasks of our application is to display plots of satellite
- telemetry data. The number of points plotted can range from 2 to millions.
- The drawing is done using XDrawSegments.
-
- I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who runs (or has tried to run) X11
- applications through a modem. Is the speed tolerable? Management wants
- to use a 9600 baud modem, my guess is that it's too slow, what is really
- a practical baud?
-
- If the connection is over a standard voice line, how reliable is it? Users
- probably won't putup with too many line drops before they declare the
- application as unusable.
-
- Thanks,
