  14. I just got a request from management to find out what the throughput
  15. would be like if we provide access to our Motif based application via
  16. a modem.  It looks like (correct me if I'm wrong) we have these choices:

  18.         1. use an X-Window terminal that can hooked via the serial line.
  19.            Graphon and HDS are two vendors that I know of, are there any
  20.            others?
  21.  
  22.         2. have a workstation at the remote site and use SLIP, CSLIP, or
  23.            PPP to network to our workstation and pass info between them.

  25. One of the major tasks of our application is to display plots of satellite
  26. telemetry data.  The number of points plotted can range from 2 to millions.
  27. The drawing is done using XDrawSegments.

  29. I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who runs (or has tried to run) X11
  30. applications through a modem.  Is the speed tolerable?  Management wants
  31. to use a 9600 baud modem, my guess is that it's too slow, what is really
  32. a practical baud?

  34. If the connection is over a standard voice line, how reliable is it?  Users
  35. probably won't putup with too many line drops before they declare the
  36. application as unusable.
